Towel Shape Folding

The weather has been unbelievable these past few days! I have never seen it so cold here in New Mexico. We woke up to snow and the kids were so excited! They played outside while daddy shoveled. We even had enough snow to go sledding.

If anyone is looking for a very simple activity to do indoors then this is the one for you. It doesn’t take long to prepare and you have all the materials right at home. I actually thought of this activity while teaching my 3 year old to fold towels. All you need is a small towel and paper or index cards. Although your child may know their shapes, this activity helps to have them come up with ways to make the shapes with towels which is more difficult than it sounds.

I drew shapes on the index cards and then had my kids make those shapes with their towels. For my 5 year old, she was able to do some more complex shapes but when we got to the pentagon she had some difficulty so I had to help her. My three year old was able to do simple shapes such as a square and rectangle.

Here’s how to do it:

Supplies:

  • Small towel
  • Index cards or paper

Instructions:

Step 1: Draw shapes on the index cards that your child can make with a towel.

Step 2: Hand your child the index cards and towel. Instruct them to say the name of the shape on the index card and try to make that same shape with their towel.
